Tim Veerwater 25 september 2025 album rock Biffy Clyro Futique WARNER

Een jaar of tien geleden leek Biffy Clyro even de grootste rockband ter wereld.
Goede platen, kneiters van singles en uit z’n voegen barstende concertzalen.
Tweeluik A Celebration Of Endings (2020) en The Myth Of The Happily Ever After (2021) consolideerde het succes weliswaar, maar het momentum leken de Schotten even kwijt.
En dan was deze tiende plaat er bijna ook nog niet gekomen.

Frontman Simon Neil verloor zichzelf in andere projecten, terwijl de broers James (bas) en Ben Johnston (drums) even niks met muziek te maken wilden hebben.
Sterker nog, de bassist twijfelde openlijk over zijn leven in een band.
Deze tweestrijd hoor je op Futique.
Opener A Little Love is nog opvallend opgewekt, op het eerste gehoor zelfs simpel, maar de tempowisselingen, 
het bijna liefelijke refrein (‘With a little love / If you want it, we can conquer it all’) en de herkenbare stem van Neil 
blijken de perfecte opmaat naar een album waar zoveel op te ontdekken valt.

Ja, de plaat is toegankelijk; grootse songs gemaakt voor stadions.
Hunting Season – over elkaar veroordelen – begint fel, maar in het refrein zie je de zingende mensenmassa gewoon voor je.
En toch, ook hier gebeurt weer genoeg onverwachts, net als in bijvoorbeeld Dearest Amygdala, dat echt anders klinkt dan we van The Biff gewend zijn.
De twijfel over de band, wat het betekent om je leven op te offeren voor De Kunst, hoor je het beste terug in Woe Is Me, Wow Is You en Friendshipping.
Wat nou als Biffy Clyro ooit stopt? Die vraag hangt over dit hele album heen en klinkt bijna in alle nummers door.

Toch is er ruimte voor hoop, beuren de melodieën en de als altijd wonderlijke teksten van Neil je op en zijn ze perfect in balans met de toch wel zware thematiek.
Een welkome comeback.
