Lew Williams - Cat Talk
Lew Williams was a practitioner of "cat music," a musical form preceding the rock & roll era that combined souped-up hillbilly sounds with hep slang in what was essentially a hillbilly adaptation of R&B. Rockabilly collectors remember Williams for the handful of Imperial recordings he made in 1956-1958 that feature his uniquely jazzy, jive-talking variety of rockabilly and rock & roll, chief among which are frequently anthologized cuts such as "Cat Talk" and "Bop Bop Ba Doo Bop." Williams seemingly fell off the planet following a final 1958 single on the Hamilton label, but turned up again 40 years later thanks to the determined sleuthing of a pair of fans. With Williams' cooperation, Bear Family Records was able to amass enough material to create a full-length anthology for this true cult figure of rockabilly music. Aside from Williams' complete Imperial recordings, which account for eight of the 29 tracks, Cat Talk brings together the Hamilton single, a rare 1953 country single that sounds a bit like fellow Texan Gene O'Quin, a vintage backing track to which Williams added vocals in 1999, and a raft of demos from the mid- to late '50s, many recorded at the famed Dallas studio of Jim Beck. The somewhat muffled-sounding demos vary from fully realized sessions with a complete band (including an early recording of "Cat Talk" from a 1954 "cat music" session) to solo performances of minute-long song fragments. The celebrated Imperial sides -- "Gone Ape Man," "Centipede," etc. -- are far and away the highlights of the set, but the remaining cuts (not to mention the 48-page booklet) fill in the blanks of a former mystery man of early rock & roll.
