A Review:
Was there ever a time when more consistently brilliant music was produced than the turn of the decade between the 70s and 80s? It's as if the musos could hear the hoof beats of the programming barbarians and were inspired to a last burst of creativity before the walls of the citadel fell. This album features not just Alphonse himself, a consistently under-rated jazz, funk and fusion drummer, but an all-star cast of top 70s musos, including Herbie Hancock on keys, Lee Ritenour on geetar, and Freddie Hubbard on flugelhorn. It's book-ended by two superb groovers, 'Do I have to?' and the uptempo 'By All Means'. Both are gems of superior, Platinum Card funk, the former with it's standout HH piano solo, the latter with a lovely and lyrical contribution from Freddie Hubbard kicking in around the seven minute mark. Alphonse himself gives a masterclass in restrained but consistently interesting pocket drumming. It may be less immediately exciting than his earlier fusion work but is thoroughly satisfying and, in his consistently inventive fills and subtle Hat work, quietly thrilling.
